NCEDA Fall Conference & Western NC Update

Greetings NCEDA Membership,

On behalf of myself, our Executive Board, and the entire NCEDA Board of Directors, I want to reach out and ask that each of you keep those in the Western end of North Carolina in your thoughts and prayers! Western North Carolina experienced significant impacts from Hurricane Helene last week, with some areas receiving over 2 feet of rain. This deluge followed recent heavy rainfall, which had already saturated the ground and caused streams to swell. The loss of life from the landslides, mudslides, and floodwaters has exceeded 30 North Carolinians in Buncombe County alone, with several people still listed as missing. This is, quite frankly, one of the worst disasters to hit our State in decades. Working in a county that was severely flooded by Hurricanes Matthew and Florence several years ago, I know that many of our friends are dealing with unimaginable levels of destruction. My heart goes out to all those affected.

Much of the region is working on getting cell service restored, and we have heard from Liz, Brittany, and several other NCEDA members living in the stricken areas. So far, the news is good that they are safe but are still dealing with power outages and limited water supplies.  During these trying times, we ask that you remember our neighbors and friends in Western North Carolina and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. The recovery effort will be long and arduous, and any help that our members can offer will be much appreciated, I am sure. Please, however, do not head out individually to the Western end of the State to help. If you would like to donate funds to assist in relief efforts, please click HERE. If you feel led to offer your skills and labor as part of the restoration efforts, please coordinate through the Red Cross or other relief agencies so that your talents may be utilized where they are needed most. There is a lot of work to be done to restore homes and businesses and to make our beautiful mountain region whole once again.

We are already receiving questions about the Fall Conference. To be honest with you, we do not know what will happen with the Conference at the moment. The NCEDA Leadership Team will be meeting to discuss the situation this week — once we have a better understanding of the situation in Asheville. We will let everyone know the status once we know more and after a decision has been made concerning the Fall Conference. Keep an eye on your e-mails from the Association as we will share more information when we have it. If you are a member in the stricken areas, please send us a text or an email to let us know how you are doing. We are a very large but connected community — let us know if we can help you in any way!

Liz Dobbins-Smith lives in Western NC and has been impacted by the storm. She and her family are safe but do not have cell and internet service. Therefore, she is unable to access her email to put her Out of Office reply on. If you need immediate assistance, please contact Torsha Eubanks, Director of Events and Operations or Brandie Grubb, Marketing and Communications Manager.

Let’s continue to keep our members located in Western NC in our thoughts and prayers!

With great sincerity,

Gary Lanier
