SUMMARY:

 

The award-winning City of Charlotte is recruiting nationally for an experienced Economic Development Director that will recognize this incredible opportunity to aggressively pursue new development, diversification, and adaptive reuse as well as stimulate innovative public-private partnership. The Economic Development Director will have the chance to play a pivotal role in shaping the City’s economic future, driving job creation, fostering business growth, and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The Director reports directly to an Assistant City Manager and is a key member of the City’s Executive Leadership Team and will work collaboratively with City leadership as well as the Mayor and City Council. The Director is responsible for driving economic growth and development within the City of Charlotte. This role involves creating and implementing strategies to attract and retain businesses, foster job creation, and enhance the overall economic vitality of the City. The Economic Development Team consists of a staff of 21 full-time staff (including the Director), and a 2025 Capital Investment Plan of $50,599,749. The Department is organized into three Divisions: Great Places, Business Recruitment and Talent Development, and Business Innovation. These Divisions work in harmony to achieve the overall mission of the Department as well as working collaboratively with City leadership as well as the Mayor and City Council.

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Urban Planning, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

 

Experience: Relevant experience in economic development, business development, or a related field. Experience in municipal or governmental settings is a plus.

 

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities;
  • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software;
  • Knowledge and understanding of economic development principles, real estate markets, and business incentives; and
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal economic development programs is advantageous.
