ESG Needs to Become More Standardized, Says S&P Global CEO Doug Peterson

Environmental, Social and Governance goals (“ESG”) are now part of Wall Street’s alphabet soup of investing themes. But how are these terms being defined? Do any standards apply? “It’s time to be more transparent, to have more standardization,” says Doug Peterson, CEO of S&P Global, one of the world’s largest providers of equity indexes. “We welcome that this debate has started to be open with the business community.” Among the groups pushing for uniform ESG standards is the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), which hopes to create a common analytical framework for assessing corporate policies on such things as climate change.
