Wheeling Chamber Closing Temporarily

With local businesses reeling from the COVID-19 shutdown and no help from the federal Payroll Protection Program (PPP), the chamber of commerce in Wheeling, Ill., has shut its doors. As a 501(c) 6 not-for-profit, the organization relies on funding from memberships and event sponsorships, both of which were dramatically reduced during the pandemic. Part of the CARES Act legislated in late March, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) excluded 501(c)6 organizations. “If ever there was a time when the Chamber was needed, it is definitely now, at a time like this,” said Linda Callahan, Executive Director of the 200-member Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce. Callahan expects the closure is not permanent and is considering merger opportunities with chambers in neighboring communities.
