Duke University has long been one of the nation’s most prestigious teaching and learning institutions. But increasingly the campus is turning its focus externally and considering how its immense intellectual capital can impact the surrounding economic landscape. Duke’s Board of Trustees is engaged in a year-long exploration of the regional economy that has included company visits, industry briefings, presentations by policymakers and entrepreneurs, and discussions with fellow higher education executives. The group toured NC State University’s Centennial Campus and the RTP facilities of United Therapeutics Corp. Research Triangle Park CEO Scott Levitan and Commerce Secretary Tony Copeland have been among those making presentations to Duke’s board, which has been gauging the university’s role in applied research and technology commercialization.
