NC Averages 4.4 New Startups Per 1,000 Residents, But Urban Counties Still Dominate
Start-ups exist in each of North Carolina’s 100 counties, according to a new database that tracks entrepreneurial activity in the state. That’s the good news. More alarming is the concentration of new firms in a handful of urban counties. Six counties – Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Mecklenburg, Orange and Wake – accounted for most the activity, as measured by the number of start-ups per 1,000 residents. Activity was lowest in poorer, more isolated areas. “Distressed communities are disconnected communities,” NC IDEA Foundation CEO Thom Ruhe recently told a 300-person audience at the North Raleigh Hilton. The remarks came during the opening session of the two-day North Carolina Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Summit. “We need to engage more people with the entrepreneurial mindset,” Ruhe suggested.
