The Dan Stewart Scholarship to the Economic Development
Course provides tuition ($575) to the economic development
course at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The one-week program is held every year.
The scholarship is named for Dan Stewart, an NCEDA member
committed to economic development as a means of creating a
better North Carolina. Stewart's career in economic
development at North Carolina State University and Carolina
Power & Light led to his appointment in the early 1960s
as director of the N.C. Department of Conservation and Development.
He is the author of “Thank You Lord for a Good Life.”
UNC-CH economic development course is considered the best introductory
course available for professionals and volunteers in the early
stages of their careers. The course is accredited by the American
Economic Development Council and offered through the UNC-CH School
of Government.
Sessions cover economic development tools for attraction,
expansion and creation, as well as marketing, finance and
management. The course features a capstone case study. Presenters
include academics, site selection consultants and other noted
professionals. Participants meet others from throughout the
state, region and country, building valuable contacts and
forming lasting friendships.
Information is mailed directly by the UNC program to the
scholarship recipients. Scholarship funds are provided on
a reimbursement basis after completion of the program.
